The Basics
Why Motorcycle Tanks Need a Different Approach
A car door panel gives a technician generous access to work from behind the dent. A motorcycle fuel tank offers almost none. Most tanks only have a fuel filler opening and a petcock or fuel pump opening to work through, so tank dent repair requires specialized long, thin tools and a slower, more deliberate technique than standard panel PDR. Steel and aluminum tanks both respond well to paintless dent repair when access allows, but the repair takes longer per dent than an equivalent car panel simply because of how limited that access is. We assess tank material, dent location, and access during inspection before quoting any tank repair, since a dent near the seam or filler neck can be more difficult to reach than one on a flatter section. Aftermarket and custom tanks add another variable, since material and construction can vary more than on a stock factory tank, so we confirm exactly what we’re working with before committing to a repair approach.
How It Works
Our Motorcycle Dent Repair Process
Tank and panel assessment comes first, since access and material determine what’s actually possible.
Tanks vs. Fairings
What About Fairing Damage?
Fairings are usually made from ABS plastic or fiberglass rather than metal, which means they don’t dent and reshape the way a steel or aluminum tank does; instead, they tend to crack, crease sharply, or scuff on impact. Because of this, standard paintless dent repair generally doesn’t apply to fairing damage, and a cracked or scuffed fairing typically needs plastic welding, filler, or a color-matched refinish rather than dent removal. We’ll tell you honestly during your inspection whether your fairing damage is a PDR candidate, which is rare, or whether it needs a different repair approach entirely, so you’re not paying for a technique that won’t actually fix the damage. This same honesty applies to tank damage that’s more severe than a standard dent, such as a tank that’s been creased or dented right at a seam or mounting point, where the metal may already be stretched beyond what reshaping alone can correct.

Motorcycle Tank & Fairing Dent Repair FAQ — Denver
Can you fix a dent in my motorcycle tank without repainting it?
In most cases, yes, if the tank is steel or aluminum and has enough access through the filler neck or petcock opening. We assess this during inspection before quoting the repair.
Does paintless dent repair work on fairings?
Rarely. Fairings are typically plastic or fiberglass and tend to crack rather than dent, so they usually need a different repair method than metal tank dent removal.
How long does motorcycle tank dent repair take?
Longer than an equivalent car panel repair, since tank access is limited to the filler neck and petcock opening. Exact timing depends on dent location and severity.
Will the tank need to be removed from the bike?
Sometimes, depending on the dent’s location and how much access the mounted tank allows. We’ll tell you during your inspection if removal is needed.
